the evolution of a MANIFESTO: a personal philosophy

A few weeks ago I was challenged with the task of developing a personal design philosophy. The current form of this document is one that results in a definition of my beliefs beyond the scope of design and architecture. It begins to approach the way I look at life in general, the rules by which I make decisions, and bits of external advice that I have to remind myself of from time to time.

  1. DREAM think big… be passionate… let your thoughts run wild…
  2. BEGIN start anywhere… just start doing something…development requires action…
  3. STUDY gain knowledge… know your history… stand on the shoulders of others… learn something new everyday…
  4. COLLABORATE don’t be afraid of working with others… be able to lead and be lead… celebrate success
  5. BE HONEST don’t be something that you’re not… don’t pretend something is what it isn’t…
  6. USE PROCESS process leads you to the unknown… your first idea is never your final answer…
  7. BE MALEABLE allow things to change you… be flexible… with rigidity comes stress, with stress comes fracture….
  8. CRITICIZE question… question yourself… test your opinion against another, you may like the other…
  9. RELAX take time off… often the answer comes when you stop thinking about the problem…
  10. SHARE communicate your ideas with others… give away ideas, others will come…
  11. BE INNOVATIVE position yourself at the boundary of human knowledge and advance the threshold…
  12. DOCUMENT record your thoughts, process, findings, inspirations, and aspirations….
  13. THEORIZE make guesses, hypotheses, and prophecies drawn from knowledge and experience…
  14. PAY ATTENTION god is in the details…
  15. EXPERIMENT test…use iteration… try, fail, adjust, repeat…
  16. BE EFFICIENT spend your time wisely…
  17. IMPROVISE combine tools… use things for what they were not intended….
  18. META-THINK think about your own thoughts, conclusions, actions, and wants
  19. BALANCE all work and no play makes jack a dull boy…
  20. DO YOUR BEST work hard…if you’re not doing your best then don’t bother…

The intent of this list was not to strictly define how all things should be approached, but rather to set a framework that will continue to be developed throughout my academic and professional career.
